HST hair transplant method

As an expert in his field Gho is connected to the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS), the European Burns Association (EBA), the International Society of Burn Injuries (ISBI) and the European Tissue Repair Society (ETRS)

His revolutionary technique set the base for Hair Science Institute, which consists of a Research- and Development branch, a Hair Science Academy and Hair Science Clinics all over the world. HST sets the power of nature to work by using the capacity for regeneration of human stem cells. The technique is distinctive because only a small part of the hair follicle, instead of the entire follicle, is harvested from the donor area. The tiny piece of tissue contains enough stem cells to grow new hair in the receptor area. A small miracle: the regenerative capacity incites hair growth in multiple areas from one single graft (hair follicle).

New grafts are placed very close to each other, which creates high hair density and a beautiful, natural-looking hairline. A special, preservation solution increases the viability of the grafts by giving them an extra boost. This dual approach is the basis of this sophisticated hair transplantation method which promotes hair growth in both receptor and donor area.

The HST procedure usually takes place in one day of treatment. Your day will look something like this: We start by taking photographs and anaesthetizing the area to be treated. Then follows the harvesting of the grafts. You won’t feel anything, all we ask is your patience. You remain mobile all day long and will not be under the influence of any sedatives. So, you can still make a phone call or stretch your legs. The doctor will then mark the receptor area after which we provide you with a lunch of your choice. In the afternoon, after applying the anaesthetic, the doctor prepares the receptor area, after which the technician applies the grafts to their new location. Once the treatment has been completed, the doctor will do a complete check-up and we take a few more photographs. You will be given instructions and everything you need for the aftercare. The contact moments are set at one day, one week, and one month after treatment to see how you are doing. The results of an HST are permanent. The transplanted hair follicles continue to produce hair for the rest of your life. It is the most effective treatment for making hair more dense and giving it more volume. The harvested grafts are ultra-small to ensure a high-density and natural-looking implant. The results are not immediately visible but take some time to develop. The implanted hair follicles need time to recover and this differs from person to person. The transplanted hair follicles start to grow new hairs three to four months after the treatment. The final result of the hair implants is visible between nine to twelve months on average.

Who is it suitable for?

Everyone loses hair every day. Increased hair loss occurs in certain spots on the scalp when more hairs. are lost more quickly than they can grow. If the follicles shrink, hair cannot be produced. Ultimately, the hair dies as a result and can no longer grow back. This leads to thin hair and bald spots.

In general, there are three causes of baldness in men and women:

  • Aging
  • The influence of hormones
  • Hereditary baldness (androgenetic alopecia)

There are a number of factors that come into play. Hair stem cell transplantation could be right for you if:

  • you have been suffering from hair loss for a quite long time and a pattern has been determined;
  • you have enough donor hair of good quality;
  • you are in good enough health for treatment;
  • your hairline has receded as a result of an operation, for example;
  • you have lost hair as a result of injuries, such as burns.

With an eyebrow transplantation, your eyebrows are filled or re-structured. The HST method uses precision instruments and requires very little recovery time, which means the eyebrows heal very quickly. The treatment is carried out in a very natural way that gives natural-looking results for your eyebrows.
A Hair Stem Cell Transplantation is a good solution for filling bald spots in your beard. The HST method is highly suitable for a beard transplantation. Virtually no scars are left behind, making this technique much more widely suitable than conventional hair transplantation methods.

Hair transplantation for afro-textured hair is more complicated than for other types of hair. This is because afro-textured hair also curls beneath the skin. This shouldn’t be a problem. However, it does depend on the condition of the donor area. Sometimes, this area may be damaged so much that we are limited in the number of grafts. We recommend speaking to one of our doctors about this.

There are various hair transplant techniques available for performing a hair transplantation. The best known are the Hair Stem Cell Transplantation (HST) method, the FUE- and FUT method. Find out more about the main differences.

A consultation is both free of charge and without obligation.

Both the consultation and the treatment are conducted by a certified doctor and technician. The technician and doctor who hold the consultation will also perform your treatment.

A consultation can be very valuable for both you and us. You will find out about the technique, receive personal advice, and have the chance to ask questions. Together with the doctor, you can discuss your options, your wishes, and your expectations in detail. An individual treatment plan will then be put together for you on that basis.
Of course, this depends on the size of the area to be treated. One of our doctors can evaluate your situation in a free, no-obligation consultation. In our experience, one treatment is usually sufficient for minor hair loss at the temples or hairline, or a small bald patch.
Generally, health insurers do not cover hair transplants. In certain cases, our treatments may be covered under health insurance subject to policy conditions. This is usually the case when the treatment is medically necessary or there is serious mental suffering. For example, scars and burns are the result of an accident and/or medical procedure.
The price depends on the number of grafts. The number of grafts that we can remove varies according to the quality of the skin and hair follicles, the size of the donor area, the presence of scars, and the client’s wishes of course. Here is an indication of the prices.

Preparation

If you want the donor area to be covered after the treatment, we recommend that you grow your hair on the back and sides to a length of at least 8 centimetres. However, if your hair is shaved, more grafts could be extracted, which would produce the best results. Of course, this is rarely done in women for aesthetic reasons, unless it is expressly requested.
You can colour your hair up to one day before the treatment.

The treatment

A single treatment will, on average, take a whole day, from 7.30 am to approximately 5.00 pm. In the morning, you will be lying face down as the grafts are removed from the donor area. Then, you will have a break and be treated to lunch on us. After lunch, we will make the holes in the receptor area and then implant the grafts. In the afternoon, you will be sitting upright. Thanks to the new technique developed by Dr Coen Gho, you will experience virtually no pain with the HST method. Of course, a local anaesthetic will be applied to the treatment area.
In a normal procedure, we can transplant up to 2,000 grafts in a treatment day. One graft contains up to three hairs. However, the number of grafts required depends on your degree of baldness and your wishes. Additionally, the number of hairs that can be transplanted depends on the size of the donor area and any scars present.
On a given treatment day, 30-35 grafts per cm² can be placed in a completely bald area. In a subsequent session, this density can be increased up to a maximum of approximately 50 grafts per cm².

After the treatment

The wounds created after an HST treatment session are so minuscule that they require virtually no recovery process. After a number of days, hardly anything is visible anymore. Within a week, all visible signs of the treatment will have vanished.
Because we work with needles of up to 0.6 mm in diameter, no scars will be visible. That means you can have any hairstyle you want in the future.
In theory, all transplanted hairs will take. However, the grafts are at their most vulnerable in the first few days after the treatment, and a few can be lost. You can reduce this to a minimum by following our instructions.

Results

Washing with shampoo and blow-drying: four days after treatment. Colouring and perming: one month after treatment.
Heavy physical exertion is not recommended in the first two weeks after treatment. However, you can get back to your day-to-day work straight away.
You can fly immediately after treatment. But to allow the wounds to heal, it is not recommended to expose yourself to the sun until all of the scabs have disappeared.
Yes. In the course of the treatment you will not be administered any medication that would impair your ability to drive. That means you can drive home straight after the treatment.
